On December 3, 2024, students of Grade 9 Environmental Management and Grade 7 explored the fascinating world of recycling with a visit to Satkar Paper Mills. This educational trip was a part of the Environmental Management course and offered a unique opportunity to see recycling in action.
From the moment the students arrived, they were warmly welcomed by the management team, who equipped them with safety helmets and vests for the tour. The visit began with a look at how paper and cardboard are transformed into pulp. Students learned that 6% paper waste is mixed with 94% water in a pulper to create this essential raw material.
One highlight of the visit was discovering how the mill conserves resources. Satkar Paper Mills recycles most of the water used in its processes and supplements it with groundwater. In the RO room, students saw how water is treated and reused to ensure continuous production.
The mill also generates its own electricity using biomass, where stubble is burned to produce steam.
Students were fascinated by the lab visit, where they were shown paper samples and flowcharts explaining the recycling process. They saw how impurities like tape and staples are removed from the pulp and how the cleaned pulp is spread onto a fabric called a wire for drying.
This visit gave students a deeper appreciation for recycling. They realized that it’s not just about reusing paper—it’s about conserving water, generating energy, and finding eco-friendly solutions to manage waste. Satkar Paper Mills serves as a powerful example of how industries can work sustainably.
The trip was an inspiring and eye-opening experience, leaving students with a better understanding of how thoughtful practices can protect the environment.
